Post Operative Instructions for NYC tooth Extractions

What do I do after tooth extraction?

it's important to follow the guidelines

Proper Care of the mouth following most dental procedures can reduce complications and speed the healing of the surgical area.

Post-Extraction Instructions

  1. Protection of the blood clot:
Maintain gentle pressure by biting on the gauze sponge that has been placed over the surgical area, or by biting on a tea bag which has been gently moistened and wrapped in a piece of gauze. Keep steady, firm pressure for 45 minutes. Repeat as often as needed.
  2. Can I rinse after the tooth is extracted?
Do not rinse or use a mouthwash for at least 24 hours. After 24 hours, a rinse with warm salt water (1/2 teaspoon table salt in 8 oz. warm water) every 1 to 2 hours is recommended. (The use of commercial mouthwash during the healing period is not encouraged.)
  3. Will I have pain after the extraction?
Following dental surgery, it is normal to experience some discomfort. If medication has been given or prescribed, take as instructed. If using an over the counter pain reliever, you may use Tylenol or generic acetominophen, Advil or Motrin or generic Ibuprofen. Please, DO NOT Take Aspirin. Call our office at Herald Square Dental Phone Number (212) 689-0024 if you have any question.
  4. Can I brush my teeth after an extraction?
The toothbrush…may be carefully used in the area of the mouth not involved by the surgical procedure. A clean mouth heals faster.
  5. When can I eat again?
Eating adequate food and fluid intake following oral surgery or extractions is most important. If you find that eating your regular diet is too difficult, you may stay on a soft diet for 24-48 hours or supplement your diet with liquids such as Ensure.
  6. What should I avoid after tooth extraction?
Avoid all excessive oral activity. Avoid any contact around the surgical area. Do not consume liquids through a straw. Avoid alcoholic beverages and refrain from smoking until healing is well established. A clean mouth heals faster.
  7. When should I make a follow-up appointment?
If sutures were used, you must make sure that you have a follow-up appointment within a week. If you did not require sutures, your Herald Square dentist will give you a specific follow up appointment.
  8. How to keep swelling at a minimum?
Gently apply an ice pack to the area for periods of 20 minutes on and 10 minutes off. This practice should continue for only the first 24 hours. One of our caring Dental Assistants will supply a Herald Square Dental & The Denture Center ice pack for your voyage home from our office in New York City.
