Are Dental Implants the best option?

Dental implants are the most recommended tooth replacement option. Implants look and feel just like your natural teeth; restoring your ability to chew and maintain a natural appearance. Dental implants are also highly recommended due to their durability, strength and comfort. While no dental procedure truly lasts a lifetime, dental implants come pretty close!

Benefits

Depending on the nature of your need, you and another patient may experience different benefits. Here are just a few:

  • Implants can improve your speech
  • Implants do not irritate or ‘rub’ your gums
  • Implants don’t impact surrounding tooth structure
  • Implants won’t slip out of place
  • Implants can restore your confidence!
  • Implants return your ability to chew and your bite strength back to normal

Are you an Implant Candidate?

Herald Square Dental is committed to helping every tristate resident who wished to improve their smile, but not every patient may be a candidate for dental implants. Here are just a few of the criteria:

  • Patients must be missing one or more teeth
  • Your teeth and gums must be in good health
  • Patients must have healthy bone and gum structure in order to support implants. If you do have recession or bone loss, you may still be a candidate with the help of bone grafting.

Bone Grafting for Dental Implants

If your bone or gum structure is unhealthy or unstable, that does not always mean you are disqualified from having dental implants. Our doctors can use bone grafting surgery to help build a solid foundation for your implants.

Bone grafting, essentially, creates a ‘home’ for your dental implants. The bone is the foundation upon which the implants will rest. If you have lost bone structure over the years, bone grafting surgery is the only way to replace and add onto the existing bone. During bone grafting surgery, a piece of bone from another part of your body is grafted onto the jawbone to provide support. When needed, synthetic bone can also be used.

For patients with minimal jawbone loss, bone grafting may be performed at the same time as the implant placement.

Dental Implants VS Dentures

Whether from pop culture or from a memory of a grandparent, most patients are familiar with dentures and regard them as the “go to” tooth replacement.  While dentures have become slimmer and more comfortable in recent years, many patients find them embarrassing and inconvenient. Dental Implants are a great alternative to traditional dentures as they not only replace the missing tooth, but replace the missing tooth roots as well allowing for a permanent solution.

From start the finish, the dental implant procedure is longer then fabricating a pair of dentures, but for most patients it is absolutely worth the wait.

Benefits of Implants over Dentures:

Dental implants provide a replacement for missing teeth, rather than a temporary solution. Implants do not move, slip or fall out of place while speaking or eating, which can be common with dentures. Implants replace the entire tooth – from root to crown, while dentures only replace the visible part of the tooth, providing a more natural fit and feel.

Dental Implants also have a profound impact on your overall appearance. Over time, the missing root support from dentures can lead to the jawbone shrinking. This shrinkage can cause cheeks and the face to appear sunken and older. Dental Implants replace the root structure as well as the tooth, so implant patient experience less sinking, sagging and wrinkling then traditional denture wearers.

 Frequently Asked Questions:

How Long Does the Process Take?

From start to finish, the dental implant procedure can take a few months. While results may vary, typically patients will come in for their consultation and walk away with their implants within a few months’ time. Because implants are placed directly into the jawbone, our office needs to make sure the jawbone is healthy and the implants are integrated properly.

What to do if I’m NOT a candidate?

If you are not a dental implant candidate initially there is still, typically, a way to receive implants. Most patients that do not qualify for dental implants have unhealthy or lacking gum and bone structure. Through bone grafting, we are able to replace jawbone in order to enable the placement or dental implants.

Many patients that are not candidates for traditional implants may be candidates for mini dental implants.  Mini dental implants are minimally invasive, and have become a very popular alternative to dental implants. Mini implants are a way for patients with dentures to have a more secure fit.

What do implants cost?

Because no two patients are the same, no two implant cases cost the same. The cost of implants will vary based on the number of implants needed, the health of your gums, and the complexity of the case.

For your convenience, we do offer a free consultation to all patients. During this consultation we will answer and address any questions or concerns and offer more information regarding pricing, expectations and length of treatments.

If you are not a dental implant candidate, we will use this time to discuss other available treatment options.
