TEAM TALK WITH SENIOR DENTAL ASSISTANT GEORGE TORRES
George has been a valued member of the Herald Square Dental team since 2004, a few months after he arrived in NYC. He is the lead dental assistant and in charge of supplies.
Before working at Herald Square Dental, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had?
I bought a property in the Dominican Republic. The original thought being to move the family drug store there. There was an existing car wash on the property. I ran the car wash for a year and a half before tearing it down to check out the viability of that business first. I was 23 years old at that time.
What is your proudest moment at Herald Square Dental?
Dealing with people. I’m less solitary at the office. I love the patient interaction. I look forward to that every day.
Do you have an office nickname? What is it?
Joan calls me Dr. George. Dr. Pasch calls me Georgy, which is what my close family and friends call me as well.
What would people never guess you do in your role?
I maintain a lot of physical parts of the office, for example, I assemble things, replace parts of dental equipment and lab equipment, paint, change doorknobs, etc.. I am the office handyman.
What are your favorite things to do outside of work?
I love making draperies because in general, I love creating things for the sport. My favorite is actually making stain glass. I haven’t done that in a long time since I don’t have adequate room for my set up in my NYC apartment.
Tell us one surprising fact about yourself.
I owned and tended a bar in the Dominican Republic in 1991 and I don’t even drink alcohol.
