Are Upper Denture Implants Better Than Traditional Dentures?

Patients who are missing all or most of their upper teeth should consider upper implant dentures instead of a standard complete or full upper denture. While traditional or standard custom dentures are a valid solution, implants in the upper jaw to support permanent dentures offer distinct advantages. However, there is no single solution that is right for everybody. Some individuals prefer traditional dentures because it is both time effective and cost effective.

Upper Dental Implants May Require an Additional Procedure

Depending on the width and integrity of the upper arch of the jawbone, you may need bone grafting or sinus lift surgery in order to have upper implants placed. This in turn adds time to the total treatment timeline before getting your final implant dentures. However, many people do not need bone grafts and receive successful implants without delays. Please note that the necessity of bone grafting or sinus lift surgery cannot be determined over the phone and requires an in-house consultation with one of our renowned implant dentists.

Palette Obstruction is a Common Complaint with Traditional Dentures

If you enjoy your food (and who doesn’t?), you know the taste, temperature, and texture of foods all play a part in your enjoyment of a meal or snack. Unfortunately, upper dentures can interfere with this because they completely cover the upper palate (the roof of the mouth). This limits your ability to sense the temperature of foods and to fully experience and feel the texture of foods.

Upper denture implants utilize a denture attached to permanent implants. This denture does not cover the roof of the mouth at all. The U-shaped design allows you to fully feel, taste, and experience the accurate temperature, and texture of everything you eat and drink, increasing your enjoyment of meals and beverages.

No More Bulk

If comfort is important to you, we suggest upper denture implants. While many people adjust quite well to traditional dentures, others never adjust to their bulk and how they cover up the upper palette. They find the dentures uncomfortable, like something foreign is always in their mouth. The thin, lightweight design and the fact that the palette is not covered invariably makes implant dentures more comfortable for most patients.

No Worry

Implant dentures do not shift, rub or move about in the mouth, making it easy to speak clearly and eat without worry because you can chew food properly. You don’t have to worry about them clicking or pinching the inside of your cheek or falling out if you bite into something tricky like when trying to enjoy an ordinary apple or corn on the cob.

Implants attached to Dentures Give You Options

Implant dentures give you options. With a permanently fixed upper dental implant solution, the upper arch of replacement teeth is attached so that it cannot be removed except by a dental professional. You care for them like your natural teeth. If you prefer a cross between traditional and fixed implant dentures, consider an implant-supported denture or snap on teeth that snap or clip into place on supporting fasteners such as a metal bar or studs. These can be removed regulary for cleaning. Both options leave the palette exposed for an improved quality of life that you won’t find with a traditional, full upper denture.
