What is Advanced Platelet Rich Fibrin?
Advanced Platelet Rich Fibrin (APRF) is a new advanced technology that helps heal wounds anywhere in the body, including those involved in oral surgery, using the patient’s own blood. Unlike Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), it has no additives. In addition to that, APRF is very rich in platelets, leukocyte cells (growth factor cells) and contains enriching Fibrin – the key ingredient for initiating the healing of a wound, with added antibacterial properties.
APRF is more advanced than PRP due to having 20 times more leukocytes cells. It is used inside of extraction sockets and around dental implants to fast-track bone and gum formation. It allows the implant to heal at an accelerated rate.
When the body detects a wound, it begins the healing process by rushing different cells to the wound. One of the main cell types is Platelets. Platelets are the cells that circulate in our blood and bind together when they recognize damaged blood vessels. When you get a cut or a wound, the platelets bind together at the site causing a blood clot which stops us from bleeding. This stimulates stem cells that help create new tissues. This overall process allows the body to heal faster and more efficiently.
In addition to oral surgery procedures such as bone grafting, sinus lift and ridge augmentation procedures, APRF has many additional clinical applications such as repairing bone defects caused by cysts and extractions, and even trauma to the skin such as sun damage, acne scars and wrinkles. It has even been used to regrow hair in patients.
At Herald Square Dental we strive to provide the best techniques for our patients that will make their healing process and overall experience quick and comfortable. If you are interested in APRF, contact our office to schedule an appointment.
